Army, police foil bid to demolish Dhanmondi-32

Staff Reporter:
Police and members of the Bangladesh Army yesterday dispersed a group of youths who attempted to demolish Dhanmondi-32 residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman again with two bulldozers ahead of the verdict in a case against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina for committing crimes against humanity during the July uprising.
The group of youths, identifying themselves as “July Fighters,” set out from the Dhaka College area around 12pm with two bulldozers and gathered on the east-side road of Dhanmondi-32 at about 12:30pm, said witnesses.
When they attempted to break through a police barricade around 1 pm police and army personnel jointly chased the group, prompting them to flee.
Moments later, the activists regrouped at the Panthapath intersection and began throwing bricks at security personnel, injuring two police members.
To bring the situation under control police fired sound grenades to disperse the youths.
A tense situation has been prevailing on Mirpur Road and vehicular movement remained suspend-ed at Russell Square as of 2:25 pm when this report was filed.
