The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday called for the government to issue the July National Charter implementation order by Friday.
“The Jamaat wants full implementation of the Consensus Commission’s proposals on state reforms. For that, the July Charter implementation order must be issued by tomorrow (Friday),” Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher said.
He was addressing a press conference held at the Al-falah Auditorium in Dhaka’s Moghbazar.
Taher urged Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus to issue the order without delay. “It would be best if the order is issued by today (Thursday). There are examples of orders being issued between 12am and 1am. If not today, then it must be done tomorrow (Friday).”
He said, “There is no room for further delay. Any delay will affect the national election, and the government, along with those trying to influence it, will be held responsible before the nation.”
The Jamaat leader also stressed that a referendum should follow the issuance of the implementation order.
The Consensus Commission has recommended holding the referendum either on the day of the national election or beforehand, while Jamaat insists that it must be held before the polls.
“If the election and referendum are held on the same day, political leaders will be busy campaigning for their party candidates. As a result, the importance of the referendum will diminish,” he argued.
Taher dismissed allegations that the Consensus Commission was advancing the agenda of a particular party.
“This has nothing to do with reality. The commission only discussed what was on its agenda and did not deliberate on any party’s agenda separately,” he said.
He reaffirmed that the Jamaat seeks a “free, fair, neutral and transparent national election” to be held in February.
