Hasina, Abdul Hamid, Quader among 172 sued in Bogura

More than 14 months after an incident in Bogura, a case has been filed accusing former President Abdul Hamid, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, and 169 others of attempted murder.

Md Araf, son of Mizanur Rahman from Nataipara area of Bogura town, filed the case with Bogura Sadar Police Station on Wednesday night (22 October).

The case also includes 250 to 300 unidentified individuals as accused.

Officer-in-Charge of Bogura Sadar Police Station Hasan Bashir confirmed the filing of the case.

The accused include former President Abdul Hamid, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former ICT Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former Education Minister Dipu Moni, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former MP and General Secretary of Bogura District Awami League Ragebul Ahsan Ripu, and former MP and President of Bogura District Awami League Mojibur Rahman Majnu.

Several union parishad chairmen, councillors, doctors, and clinic owners have also been named as accused. The case includes individuals from Bogura Sadar, Sariakandi, Gabtoli, Shibganj, Sonatola, Shahjahanpur, Dhunot, Rajshahi, and Sirajganj areas.

According to the plaintiff Araf, he and several others participated in a student movement against discrimination last year. On 3 August 2024, around noon, when they brought out a procession and reached Dattabari–Bargola Road in Bogura town, the accused allegedly attacked them with sticks, rods, hockey sticks, knives, machetes, and firearms. Many protesters, including Araf, were seriously injured, and Araf claimed to have been shot 43 times before collapsing to the ground.

He said, “Later, fellow protesters rescued me and tried to admit me to Banani General Hospital, but I was denied entry. Then they took me to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where the accused prevented my treatment. I was forced to receive treatment at home until I was hospitalised at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital after the fall of the government on 5 August 2024.”
