Staff Reporter:
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is set to receive powers under a proposed ordinance that will enable it to probe corruption by Bangladeshi nationals both at home and abroad, as well as by foreigners residing in the country.
Law Adviser Asif Nazrul briefed reporters about the matter at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Thursday, following the Advisory Council meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.
The Council gave in-principle approval to the draft Anti-Corruption Commission (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.
Asif Nazrul said the ACC will now be able to probe allegations against anyone living in Bangladesh, regardless of nationality, and will also have the authority to investigate Bangladeshi citizens if evidence of corruption abroad is found.
While the scope of the Commission has been broadened, he said that the mechanisms for conducting investigations overseas have yet to be detailed and will be clarified once the law is finalised.
