Staff Reporter:
Describing the signing of the July Charter as a “historic moment,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the event demonstrated that Bangladesh’s political parties can unite and act responsibly when the nation’s interests are at stake.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Mirza Fakhrul expressed optimism that the parties which have not yet signed the Charter will do so after further dialogue.
Referring to the National Citizen Party (NCP) — which played a key role in the July Uprising but was absent from the signing — he termed their non-participation a “misunderstanding.”
The BNP leader noted that during discussions and consensus-building sessions, NCP representatives had shown a generally positive stance on most issues.
“Whatever differences remained could have been resolved through further dialogue. I believe it was a lack of foresight on their part; otherwise, they would have signed today,” he said.
When asked whether disagreements on certain issues might persist, Mirza Fakhrul replied that debates are a natural part of politics everywhere and at all times.
“Unfortunately, we have a tendency to enjoy debates,” he added with a smile.
Despite lingering differences, the BNP secretary general hailed the Charter as a “great achievement,” emphasising that more discussions will take place in the coming days to ensure its effective implementation.
