ICT demands capital punishment, confiscation of illegal assets of Hasina, her aides

Staff Reporter:

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has demanded compensating the victims of July Uprising by confiscating illegal properties of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her aides.

ICT Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam has also pleaded for capital punishment for Hasina, terming her as the mastermind of all the evil deeds.

“Sheikh Hasina is the mastermind of all the crimes. She is an unrepentant, heartless criminal. She deserves the capital punishment. No mercy should be shown to her regarding the death penalty,” he told the tribunal on Thursday during the prosecution’s arguments.

The prosecution placed the arguments for the fifth consecutive day in the crimes against case filed against Hasina and two of her aides before three-member ICT-1, headed by its Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder.

Former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun are co-accused in the case.

However, Mamun has already pleaded guilty and become an approver.

Tajul said, “For the murder of over 1,400 people she ought to have been hanged 1,400 times, which is not possible. However, it is appropriate to impose the maximum punishment in order to establish rightful justice, so that in future no one can kill the citizens of their own country in this way.”

In his arguments, Tajul also pleaded for capital punishment for Kamal, as he was one of the members of ‘Gang of Four’ responsible for suppressing the July-August Mass Uprising.

About the former police chief, Tajul Islam said that as he has become an approver and cooperated with the court by providing information in accordance with the law and helping to uncover the truth, it is up to the tribunal to take an appropriate decision regarding him.
