Suspicion behind Kalabagan murder

Staff Reporter:

Husband’s suspicion over his wife’s alleged extramarital affair might be the reason behind the killing of the woman at Kalabgan in the capital, police said.
Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Ramna Division) said this at a press briefing yesterday at DMP media centre after the arrest of Nazrul Islam, 59, husband of victim Taslima Akter, from Bongshal area in the capital.
“Nazrul Islam allegedly abused his wife mentally and physically suspecting her of having an extramarital affair. He was also afraid she might take control of his property and funds in the bank,” he said.
Taslima was found dead in a freezer in her house on Sunday night.
Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in Nawabpur area around 11:30 pm and arrested Nazrul with the help of technology after analyzing the CCTV footage, Masud Alam said.
After primary interrogation, police came to know that Nazrul killed his wife following family feud, he said.
Police also recovered a machete used during the killing from a wardrobe of the house.
Masud Alam said Nazrul had suspicion that his wife had an extra-marital relationship with someone and he was also concerned over his FDR (fixed deposit) approximately Tk one crore and Tk 34 lakh in the bank account held by his wife which made him anxious about the possibility of losing this money.
Nazrul hit Taslima with sharp weapons when she was asleep around 12 am and then wrapped the body with a towel, a bed sheet and a veil and hid it in the refrigerator of the house.
Later, he tried to hide the signs by turning over the blood-stained mattress, cleaning the floor and wash-ing his own clothes, he said.
When asked, Nazrul Islam told his eldest daughter Naznin Akhter that their mother had eloped with an-other man.
At that time, Naznin saw blood stains on the wall of the house.
Nazrul also dropped their two daughters to their relative’s house in Adabor area and fled.
Seeing his suspicious behavior movement, Taslima’s brother and two daughters lodged a complaint with Kalabagan Police Station on Monday and after getting complaint police recovered the body of Taslima from the freezer of the house.
A case was filed with Kalabagan Police Station in this regard.
