Habibul Awal’s bail plea rejected

A Dhaka court yesterday rejected a bail plea filed by former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal in a case lodged over alleged manipulation of national elections.
Judge Nargis Islam of the Dhaka Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court passed the order after hearing the petition.
Detective Branch (DB) of police had arrested him on June 25 last from the city’s Moghbazar area and produced him before the court. On June 26, the court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Musta-fizur Rahman placed him on a three-day remand.
BNP National Executive Committee member Md Salah Uddin Khan filed the case on June 22 against 24 individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three former CECs, over alleged manip-ulation of the national elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024.
Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, four former Inspectors General of Police (IGP), sev-eral former election commissioners, and former chiefs of Special Branch (SB), National Security Intelli-gence (NSI) and Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) were also named in the case.
Later on June 22, police took KM Nurul Huda into custody from his residence in Sector 5, Uttara, after a mob apprehended the former CEC around 7:00 pm. Later, he was formally shown arrested in the case.
