Tareq Md Ariful next Bangladesh envoy to USA

Staff Reporter:

Ambassador Tareq Md Ariful Islam, who most recently served as Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Offices in Geneva, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of Bangla-desh to the United States of America (USA).
The position of Bangladesh’s top envoy in Washington had remained vacant for several months after Ambassador Asad Alam Siam was appointed Foreign Secretary.
A senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed yesterday that Ambassador Tareq has al-ready moved from Geneva to Washington DC to assume his new assignment.
Ambassador Tareq, a career diplomat from the 17th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Af-fairs) cadre, joined the Foreign Service in 1998. Over the course of his career, he has held key positions at home and abroad.
Before his Geneva assignment in June 2024, he served as Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, succeeding Ambassador Mohammad Sufiur Rahman in the UN role.
He also served as Deputy Permanent Representative at Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York from November 2020.
Earlier, he worked in the New York Mission between 2005 and 2009 as First Secretary and later Coun-selor, and then at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata (2009-2012) as Counselor.
