A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered former vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, to be sent to jail over graft allegations related to a special development project at the university.
Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court passed the order after a hearing.
During the hearing, Anti-Corruption Commission Prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi pleaded for Kalimullah’s detention.
On the other hand, Advocate Mohsin Reza and others argued for his bail. They also requested that he be given division facilities in jail in case of bail plea rejection.
After hearing both sides, the court passed the order to send him to jail.
In addition, the same court also imposed a travel ban on five individuals, including two former vice-chancellors of Begum Rokeya University — Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah and AKM Nur-un-Nabi — over the same charges.
The others facing the travel ban are – Md Jahangir Alam, former executive engineer of the university and member secretary of the tender evaluation committee, contractor Md A Salam Bacchu, and MM Habibur Rahman.
On Thursday, Kalimullah was arrested from his Mohammadpur residence around 12:30pm in connection with the graft case.
The ACC filed the lawsuit in June against five people, including Kalimullah, accusing them of embezzling Tk4 crore from a development project.
