Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the fugitive son of Sheikh Hasina, posted a video online, claiming it depicted a recent incident in Gopalganj. The video quickly stirred public uproar across social media platforms.
However, fact-checking platform Rumour Scanner has confirmed that the viral footage is not from Gopalganj at all. It is actually an old video from Brahmanbaria, showing a mob beating a suspected mugger before handing him over to the police.
Upon investigation, Rumour Scanner found that the video had been circulating online since 4 June. It shows an incident from the Bhadoghar Bus Stand cattle market area in Brahmanbaria, where locals caught and assaulted a mugger before police intervened.
The same video was found posted on 4 June by a Facebook page named Praner Brahmanbaria and a user named Mohammad Sajon. Both posts claimed the footage was from the Bhadoghar cattle market, showing the handover of a thief to law enforcement after a public beating.
Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated across Bangladesh on 7 June this year. Around that time, law enforcement agencies launched nationwide operations to prevent extortion and mugging, especially in and around livestock markets.
Therefore, the claim that the video shows a recent murder in Gopalganj involving police is entirely false. It is a misleading reuse of old footage from Brahmanbaria.
