Curfew in Gopalganj extended until 6am Saturday

Staff Reporter:

The curfew in Gopalganj has been extended once again following the recent violence, clashes, and deaths centring a rally organised by the National Citizen Party (NCP).

Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Kamruzzaman made the announcement on Friday.

According to the fresh directive, the ongoing curfew will now remain in force until 6:00 am Saturday.

Authorities had first imposed the curfew from 8:00 pm on 16 July to 6:00 pm the following day in the wake of deadly clashes that broke out centring the NCP’s scheduled programme. It was later extended from 6:00 pm Thursday (17 July) to 11:00 am Friday, followed by another phase from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm after a three-hour break.

The renewed extension came amid concerns over further unrest in the area.

Meanwhile, the interim government has formed a high-level probe committee to investigate the incidents. The committee will be led by Home Ministry Senior Secretary Nasimul Gani and will include one additional secretary each from the public administration ministry and the law and justice division.

The committee has been instructed to submit a detailed report to the office of the chief adviser within two weeks.

On Thursday, both the army and the police issued statements regarding the situation in Gopalganj, highlighting ongoing efforts to maintain law and order.
