Chhatra Dal leader Robin confesses to Mitford trader killing

Staff Reporter:

Tarek Rahman Robin, an accused in the brutal killing of scrap metal trader Lal Chand alias Sohag in the Mitford Hospital area of Old Dhaka, has given a statement confessing his part in the sensational murder.

Robin is the senior joint convener of Ward 30 unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, under Chawkbazar police station in the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Gias on Saturday recorded his statement just a day after the accused was placed on a two-day remand in a case filed under the Arms Act.

After recording the statement, the court ordered the police to send Robin to jail.

Earlier, two cases were filed with Kotwali Police Station in connection with the killing — one for murder and the other under the Arms Act.

In the murder case, Mahmudul Hasan Mohin was put on a five-day remand, while Robin was remanded in the arms case on 11 July.

On 9 July, a group of assailants hit Sohag with large chunks of concrete and beat him to death in broad daylight for allegedly refusing to pay extortion money.

The police arrested Mohin and Robin on 11 July.

Sohag, son of Yusuf Ali Hawlader of Purbo Namabari village under Keraniganj Model Police Station, had been running a scrap business on Rajani Ghosh Lane in the Mitford area for a long time.
