Jatrabari burn victim dies at DMCH

Staff Reporter:

A 30-year-old woman, who sustained burn injuries in an explosion apparently from gas leak at a building in the capital’s Jatrabari area, died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Eti, wife of Ripon of the Jatrabari area.

On Thursday, three members of a family sustained serious burn injuries in an explosion around 1:40am apparently from gas leak on the ground floor flat of a six-storey building on Shahid Faruk Road at Jatrabari.

The injured were Ripon, 40, who suffered 70% burns, his wife Eti, 30, who suffered 45% burns, and their daughter Rafia, aged around 3 to 5 years, who sustained 90% burns, said Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

The injured were taken to the burn institute where Eti breathed his last around 1pm, said Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of DMCH police outpost.

The fire broke out reportedly after a mosquito coil was lit triggering an explosion believed to have resulted from accumulated gas inside the flat.
