Individuals convicted by ICT ineligible to contest polls: AG

Staff Reporter:

The people who will be convicted by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) are ineligible to contest any election in the country in future, Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman said on Saturday.

“There will be no scope for the individuals convicted by the tribunal to take part in any election as it is clearly outlined in the constitution and existing legal framework,” he said while addressing a programme in Dhaka this noon.

He said ensuring good governance in the country will be difficult without the active and mindful participation of all citizens in the government activities.

About the growing spate of mob violence, Asaduzzaman said it is impossible to bring the evolved situation under control without the restoration of the rule of law in the country.

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country on 5 August last year in the face of the student-led July-August mass upsurge.

After the dramatic changeover, the interim government detained several then Awami League leaders for their indulgence in all-out corruption and abuse of the state power and they are now being prosecuted by the ICT.

According to the country’s constitution and existing legal framework, they will lose their eligibility to participate in any election in the country in future, added the chief legal adviser to the interim government.

The restoration of good governance is crucial for the country at this moment for implementing the spirit of the July mass upsurge, he said.
