The government has accepted all the demands raised by the protesters of Jagannath University (JnU), including housing allowances, full budget approval, campus expansion and justice for the police action against teachers.

University Grants Commission Chairman Prof SMA Faiz came up with the announcement hours after the protesters started a hunger strike occupying the Kakrail intersection in Dhaka to press home their demand.

Earlier the announcement, Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam in his verified Facebook page wrote that the government will soon announce the roadmap to meet the demand.

The education adviser will immediately announce a clear roadman within hours to resolve the JnU problems, including the residential crisis, he wrote in the post.

A good number of student and teachers of the JnU have been staging demonstration for the last 50 hours to mount a pressure on the government and at one point, they went on a hunger strike around 3:50pm on Friday.

The hunger strike was formally announced by Muhammad Monzur Morshed Bhuiyan, spokesperson of the JnU Teachers’ Association and a professor of the Finance department.

Both current and former students also joined the protests programme to force the government to execute the demand.

Earlier, Mahatab Limon, general secretary of the JuN journalists’ association, made the initial announcement on behalf of the platform ‘Jobi Oikkya’ during a rally.

On Thursday, Prof Rois Uddin, general secretary of the JnU Teachers’ Association, also announced the programme on behalf of ‘Jobi Oikkya’ following consultations with leaders of all political and social organisations on the campus.

The students have vowed to continue their sit-in at Kakrail until their demands are fulfilled.
