10 killed in lightning strikes in 4 districts

At least 10 were people killed, including a child, and four were injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in open fields across Kishoreganj, Brahmanbaria, Naogaon and Habiganj districts on Sunday.

In Kishoreganj, three people, including a college student, were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes. Two more people were injured in the incidents.

Witnesses said Faruk Mia, 60, of Rasulpur village in Bhairab upazila, was killed when a thunderbolt struck him while he was cutting paddy in the haor areas around 4:30pm.

Meanwhile, Foysal Mia, 28, of Srinagar union in Bhairab upazila, was killed by a lightning strike while going outside during rain in the afternoon.

Kabir Hosain, a student of Hazi Asmat College, was killed when a streak of thunderbolts struck him while working in a field in Kuliarchar upazila on Sunday afternoon.

Bhairab Upazila Health Complex Medical Officer Dr Umme Habiba said all of them were brought dead at the hospital.

In Brahmanbaria, five people were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Akhaura and Nasirnagar upazilas.

Quoting witnesses, police said Abdur Razzak of Tekanagar village in Nasirnagar upazila died on the spot by a lightning strike while cutting paddy. A girl named Zakia, 7, was also killed in Kachua village, Chatalpara union of the upazila.

Shamsul Huda of the Beribadh area in the same upazila was killed when a thunderbolt struck him while working in his field.

Meanwhile, two more people were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Akhaura upazila on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Jamir Kha and Selim Mia.

In Naogaon’s Manda upazila farmer Zillur Rahman, 40, was hit by a lightning while collecting dried paddy, leaving him dead on the spot.

In Habigan’s Ajmiriganj upazila a farmer named Razu Mia, 20, died from lightning strike when bathing in the rain in an open field.
