Police have detained the supervisor and driving assistant of the bus that hit a parked ambulance, killing five on Dhaka-Mawa Expressway on Thursday.
Officers from the Hasara Highway Police Station arrested bus supervisor Kalyan Biswas and driving assistant Saiful Islam from the Dhaka Medical College Hospital area in the afternoon. The bus driver is still on the run, though. Legal proceedings are underway against the culprits, police have said.
Hasara Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Kader Zilani told reporters that after the fatal accident police launched drives to arrest the bus driver and other workers of the bus company.
Earlier, around 11.30am Thursday, a Golden Line Paribahan bus hit a parked ambulance from behind on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway at Nimtola, Sirajdikhan, Munshiganj.
One was declared dead on the spot, and the rest of the four on arrival at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Four others were also injured.
The ambulance suffered a tire puncture and was awaiting repairs on the right lane of the expressway. The speeding bus had little time to apply brakes before hitting the ambulance from behind.
