National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam on Friday urged the interim government to revoke the registration of the Awami League and thus ban the party’s organisational activities.
He came up with the demand at a programme organised to mark the founding anniversary of the AB Party at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.
“The ongoing political discourse is focused on reform, election, and trial of the Awami League. None of the issues stand in opposition to the others, rather they collectively offer a pathway to democratic transformation,” he said.
The country’s people rejected “Mujibism and the Awami League” through the 5 August mass uprising, Nahid said.
“Awami League leaders have fled the country in the face of public outrage. Under the circumstances, the question of whether the Awami League should be allowed to continue its activities is no longer relevant. The party has lost its moral legitimacy in doing politics,” he said.
“At the moment, we should focus on how to ban the party through legal procedure. Therefore, the Awami League’s registration should be cancelled without delay and its organisational activities must be prohibited.”
The NCP leader added, “Although all political parties have taken a stance in favour of reform, we must be united on a fundamental point of reform which can bring about a change in the governing system and ensure the transfer of power.
“Without this transformation, the aspirations of the people will remain unfulfilled.”
