No election to be allowed before AL’s trial, reforms: NCP

Staff Reporter:

Amid the mounting pressure from BNP for an early election, National Citizen Party (NCP) has categorically said it will not allow any election in the country before Awami League is put on trial and the reform agenda is concluded successfully.

The top leaders of the NCP, a newly floated political party in Bangladesh, initiated by the Students Against Discrimination and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, made the warning while addressing a public rally held in front of the South gate of the national mosque in Dhaka on Friday.

Taking part in the mammoth rally, NCP Convener Nahid Islam urged the interim government to impose a ban on Awami League and its political activities by formulating a law during the trial of its leaders and activists for their involvement in the gruesome killing in the July-August mass upsurge last year.

“After all, Awami League is not a political party, it is a terrorist organisation. Its activists were involved in killings at Shapla Chattar, an anti-Modi rally and the July mass uprising. In this context, its registration must be scrapped,” he said.

Urging the authorities to take proper steps to prevent Awami League leaders from taking part in the next general election, Nahid said his party men will never allow any of them to participate in the national polls.

He also put pressure on the government to announce the July Charter with a specific clarification on banning the Awami League politics from Bangladesh forever.

The fascist Awami League will be put before the people’s court if the interim government fails to ensure its trial, said the young student leader, adding that no election will be allowed in the country before it.

Meanwhile, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman while virtually addressing a programme held at the National Press Club in Dhaka, called upon the government to announce the roadmap of the national election as early as possible.
