Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has urged the interim government to hold the local body election first to examine the efficiency of the Election Commission.
“Hold the local body polls immediately to assess the capability of the Election Commission, as it will help us to understand how the commission is sincere in holding a free, fair and credible election,” he said on Friday.
The Jamaat chief made the call when the prevailing debate on whether the local body or national election should be held first is now at its peak among the political parties.
While addressing a workers’ meeting held at the Circuit House ground in Mymensingh, he said that the countrymen will never accept the commission if it favours any party in the election.
About the urgency of the local body election, he said the people across the country are suffering greatly due to the absence of local body representatives.
He also urged Prof Muhammad Yunus, chief of the interim government, to revoke the proposals placed by the Women’s Reform Commission in the context of controversies on religious ground.
