ICT prosecution to submit charge sheet in 4 weeks

The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) will file a formal charge sheet within four weeks in Chankharpul massacre case, where six innocents were gunned down during the July-August mass uprising.
Confirming this to tribunal, ICT Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam yesterday pleaded for four weeks time to go through the probe report filed by the investigation agency on April 20 and to prepare the formal charge.
Allowing the prosecution plea, Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, chairman of the three-judge pan-el of the tribunal adjourned the hearing till May 25.
The ICT investigation agency, since it was reconstituted on September 18, 2024, filed its maiden probe report, implicating eight people including former commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Habibur Rahman in the case. Of the eight, Inspector Arshad, constables Md Suzon, Imaz Hossain Emon and Nasirul Islam have been arrested and are now behind the bars.
“The investigation agency prepared the 90-page probe report in six months and 13 days. Testimonies of 79 witnesses have been recorded, 19 video footages, 11 news paper reports, two audio files, 11 books or reports and six death certificates were attached with the report,” Muhammad Tajul Islam told newsmen on April 21.
Shahriar Khan Anas, Mahdi Hasan Zunaid, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque and Manik Miah were brutally killed in police firing in Chankharpul area during the mass uprising.
