Action warned for vandalism during protest

Staff Reporter:

Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury yesterday said the vandalism that occurred at various shops and businesses during the protest against the genocide in Gaza on Monday should not have happened, warning of tougher action against those involved in the vandalism.
“This should not have happened. So far, 49 individuals have been arrested in connection with the vandal-ism. We will remain vigilant to prevent recurrence of such incidents,” he said.
He made the remarks while responding to a query on the government’s stance regarding the incidents of vandalism, following a meeting on law and order held at the ministry’s conference room at the Secretari-at. The meeting was convened to outline the security plan for a peaceful celebration of Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla New Year, 1432.
Mentioning that the duty of the home ministry is to ensure security in Dhaka and elsewhere in the coun-try, he said, “We will take tougher action against those involved in the vandalism and make sure such type of incident will never happen again.”
Responding to another question, the Home Adviser said the attack on various shops and business estab-lishments was not preplanned. “It happened by chance,” he said.
