Freedom fighter’s house attacked in Cumilla

Staff Reporter:

A group of 30-35 miscreants violently attacked the house of a freedom fighter and Awami League supporter at a village in Cumilla past midnight on Friday.

On receiving information, police rushed to the spot, prompting the attackers to flee before they could manage to enter the house and attack the Liberation War veteran named Abdul Hye.

The elderly freedom fighter, his wife, daughter-in-law and grandchildren were present during the attack on his house at Chauddagram upazila, Cumilla.

Abdul Hye is a central committee member at Krishak League, an affiliate body of Awami League (AL), and his son Golam Mustafa Bhuiyan is the second-in-command at the local unit of Jubo League, another affiliate body of AL.

Both were in hiding following the harassment of the freedom fighter in December last year. The freedom fighter returned to the house on Eid day on security assurances from local authorities to join celebrations with family members.

Chauddagram Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hilal Uddin told reporters the miscreants launched the attack in the dead of night sensing the presence of Golam Mustafa Bhuiyan in the house. Later, the situation returned to normal as police boosted efforts to nab the criminals and ensure security for the freedom fighter, Hilal Uddin claimed.

The miscreants used sharp local weapons and broke the front gate, doors, and windows of the house in attempts to break in.

Since the ouster of Awami League (AL) government in August last year, party activists have been subjected to humiliation and brutal attacks across the country owing to their ties to the entity directly involved in gross human rights violations.

On 22 December last year, some miscreants publicly harassed freedom fighter Abdul Hye by forcing him to wear a “garland of shoes.” The war veteran filed a defamation suit in this connection. Police managed to detain only one accused in the case, and later released him on bail.

The war veteran moved to Feni fearing for his life, but returned to the family home late last month to celebrate Eid.
