The Oxford University has awarded Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed with honourary fellowship for life for his distinguished contributions to protecting the rule of law, and human rights, while ensuring justice.
A Supreme Court press release confirmed the matter on Wednesday.
The Oxford University accolade is not only a recognition of the chief justice’s personal achievements, but also is a reflection of the respect the world now has for Bangladesh judicial system, the press release noted.
The fellowship is undoubtedly is a show of the international recognition of the improvement, intellectual integrity and the commitment to justice present in the Bangladesh judicial system, the press release adds.
Syed Refaat Ahmed completed his LLB studies from Dhaka University, and post-graduate studies in law from Wadham College of Oxford University, UK. He secured first-class scores in his post-graduate results.
He became the country’s 25th chief justice after the fall of the Awami League regime on 5 August last year. Upon taking office, he outlined a slew of measures to reform the country’s distorted judicial system.
