The Dhaka University (DU) authority celebrated the Independence Day on Wednesday with due solemnity.
The university authorities organised a series of programs, including a discussion meeting, wreath-laying ceremony at the National Memorial, special prayers, and the illumination of important buildings on campus.
The celebrations began early in the morning with the hoisting of the national flag at all important buildings and residential halls of the university. At 6am, teachers, students, officers, employees, and alumni gathered at Smriti Chirantan Chattar and marched to the National Memorial, led by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan. The Vice-Chancellor, along with Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Sayema Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and Proctor Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, laid wreaths in memory of the martyrs. Deans of various faculties, hall provosts, teachers, students, and staff were also present.
Marking the solemnity of the day, special prayers were held after Zuhar at the university’s central mosque, for seeking forgiveness for the souls of the martyred intellectuals from the Almighty.
Special prayers were also arranged at other religious places of worship. Additionally, Curzon Hall and the Teacher-Student Center (TSC) were illuminated, and sweets were distributed among the children of university employees.
