Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said the people of Bangladesh are now prioritising trials against Awami League (AL) activists for carrying out the July massacre last year, and will not accept the rehabilitation of the party, according to a facebook post published early Friday.
The Jamaat chief did not specifically call for banning the party, but in a comment on the facebook post said the AL chapter was closed on the day it was ousted in the uprising last year.
There is no scope to reopen the chapter, he commented without specifying if he favoured a total ban on Awami League as a political party.
The debate on banning Awami League gained traction early Friday, when Hasnat Abdullah, one of the key leaders of last year’s anti-fascist uprising, made a bombshell facebook post. In the post, Hasnat detailed his recent experience at an army cantonment, where some “heavyweights” asked him to support Awami League’s return to politics through fresh leadership.
Awami League leaders and activists have been in hiding since the party was ousted from power on 5 August last year.
