A case has been filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and 201 others on charges of attempting to murder Saifuddin Mohammad Emdad, a student of the capital’s Government Aliya Madrasah.
MA Hashem Raju filed the case on Thursday in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam.
After recording the plaintiff’s statement, the court ordered the OC of Shahbagh Police Station to submit a report on the incident within seven days.
Other accused in the case include Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Saima Wazed Putul, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Obaidul Quader, Salman F Rahman, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh, former IGP Benazir Ahmed, Monirul Islam, Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, Mashiur Rahman, Dr Gowhar Rizvi, Dr Tawfiq-e-Ilahi Chowdhury, Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, Harun Or Rashid, Biplob Kumar Sarkar, Naimul Islam Khan, Naim Nizam, Shyamal Dutta, Subhash Singh Roy, and others.
According to the case statement, Raju, along with others, reached the intersection near Hotel InterContinental from the Central Shaheed Minar at 11:30am on 4 August during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
At one point, leaders and activists of Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Awami League blocked the path of the victim and his companions, then opened fire, threw hand grenades, petrol bombs, and exploded crude bombs with the intent to kill the protesters.
At one stage, the victim’s right eye was damaged by tear gas, pepper spray, and pellet shots fired by the police to disperse the procession.
As Raju fell on the road, unidentified members of Chhatra League, Jubo League, and the police started assaulting him.
