The national election will be held by December this year if the political parties want it based on the minor reforms, otherwise, it will take place by June next year, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus said on Friday
Yunus said this while visiting UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres paid a courtesy call on the chief adviser at his office in Dhaka this noon.
Expressing his determination to hold a free, fair and inclusive election, Yunus said, “We will hold the national election by December this year if our political parties want it after limited reforms, otherwise, it will be deferred to June next year upon completion of the full reform agenda.”
Earlier while addressing to the nation, the chief adviser said that the national election will be held in late 2025 or early 2026.
Later, the chief adviser’s press wing in a press statement said that the 13th parliamentary election will be held by December of the current year or by March of the next year.
Meanwhile, BNP and some like-minded political parties have been mounting pressure on the interim government in many ways to hold the national election as early as possible on completion of the necessary reforms.
Besides, the UN chief also expressed his willingness to support the government’s reform initiatives to hold a free, fair and credible national election in Bangladesh.
During a cordial conversation at the meeting, Yunus also extended his heartfelt congratulations to Antonio Guterres on his visit to Bangladesh at this crucial time
“Your visit is not only important for Rohingya refugees but also time-befitting for Bangladesh,” Yunus said.
