Nahid to lead NCP set to be launched on Friday

Staff Reporter:

The National Citizens’ Party (NCP), a new political party formed by leaders of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (SAD), is set to be launched on Friday amid the country’s volatile political situation.

Nahid Islam, a recently resigned adviser of the interim government, will lead the NCP as convener, while Akhter Hossain, a key coordinator of the SAD, will serve as the party’s member secretary.

Sarjis Alam, a key coordinator of the SAD, will serve as the principal organizer (north), while Hasnat Abdullah, a veteran student leader, will hold the same position for the southern region of the party.

Besides, Nasir Uddin Patwary will be appointed as the principal coordinator, while Hannan Masud will serve as the joint coordinator of the party.

Akhter Hossain, in a video massage this evening, said that they would officially announce the party through a programme to be held at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital Dhaka on Friday.

He also called upon people and media men to attend the programme scheduled for 3 pm on the day.

The decision was taken during a meeting held at Jatiya Nagorik Committee’s Bangla Motor central office this afternoon.

Nahid Islam, who was instrumental in the student-led movement that ensured topple of Awami League government of 5 August, came out of the cabinet led by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday, to join politics.

The country’s political arena became vibrant when student leaders earlier announced their plan to form a new political party to contest the next general election, likely to be held at the end of 2025 or early 2026.

Later, the country’s major political party, BNP, has urged advisers involved in the process to step down from the government if they wish to form a political party, saying that BNP will not accept any attempt to establish a party, remaining in power.
