Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Farooq-e Azam yesterday urged the United Nations (UN) for preparing a road map for safe and sustainable repatriation of the forcibly displayed Myanmar citizens to their mother land.
“We want that UN would prepare an explicit roadmap for safe and sustainable repatriation of the Myanmar citizens, who took shelter in Bangladesh being displaced from Rakhain state in Myan-mar”, he said.
The adviser said this when UN secretary general’s special envoy for Myanmar Julie Bishop called on him at his secretariat office here.
The adviser said, “We have given shelter to the Rohingyas on humanitarian ground… but the solu-tion of the problem lies on their safe and sustainable repatriation to Myanmar.”
He mentioned that long time staying of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar poses a negative impact in the area. “If the repatriation begins soon then it won’t only deteriorate the overall situation of this area but also create unrest outside that area,” he added.
During the meeting, they also discussed on various aspects on the displaced Rohingyas.
Informing the UN’s special envoy about Bhasanchar project, Farooq-e Azam said there is a scope here to engage these Rohingys in economic activities.
The adviser also explained the issue with due importance as the UN provides humanitarian assis-tance in Bhasanchar.
Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman explained security related issues of the Rohingya camps at the meeting.
During the meeting, the UN special envoy also informed the adviser that communication and dis-cussion are underway with all the internal and external participants of Myanmar along with UN member states for beginning the repatriation process soon and preparing a favorable environment for repatriating Rohingys to Myanmar.
The UN special envoy also expressed satisfaction after informing the overall situation and congrat-ulated all concerned for the management of the situation.
Disaster Management and Relief Ministry’s Additional Secretaries KM Abdul Wadud, ABM Shafiqul Haider and other senior officials, among others, attended the meeting.
