Staff Reporter:
Police have removed protesting teachers, who are demanding the completion of their appointment process at government-backed institutions, from Shahbagh intersection by using water canons.
Earlier, hundreds of teachers recommended for joining government primary schools blocked the Shahbagh intersection protesting a High Court order cancelling their appointment process.
Many of the protesters wore shrouds, while some carried infants and toddlers. Law enforcers were standing nearby.
Vehicular movement from Science Lab to Matsya Bhaban was suspended due to the blockade, officers from Shahbagh Police Station told reporters.
The protesters are demanding the appointment of 6,531 people as assistant teachers to government primary schools, after the withdrawal of High Court’s 6 February order cancelling the recruitment process.
The High Court scrapped the process in response to a writ petition filed by 31 job exam candidates, who claimed they were unfairly dropped in the selection process under the previous discriminatory quota system.
The High Court called for retaking the exam.
