Staff Reporter:
Ousted premier Sheikh Hasina and her foreign allies have been stoking public fury through conspiratorial messages, but the interim government also played its part in Wednesday-Thursday mob violence by showing “grave indifference” in preventing anarchy, despite having prior knowledge, TIB has said.
It is beyond question that the Prof Muhammad Yunus-led administration is committed towards establishing order after clearing the garbage of 16-year authoritarian rule, the Germany-based anti-corruption watchdog said in a statement on Friday.
However, questions can be raised regarding the government’s willingness to take careful and risk-free preventive measures in the event of any security emergency.
Since the start of violence at Dhanmondi-32 on Wednesday night, the government has only resorted to avoiding taking responsibility for the law and order breakdown by issuing passive statements. Instead, the government should address such security situations through legal and effective means.
Otherwise, if mob violence continues, the Awami League’s pro-fascist forces would themselves benefit from the anger against them, the international community would not get a positive signal regarding a “new Bangladesh,” and significantly threaten the chances of establishing good governance and national stability.
The highest priority should be given on ensuring exemplary punishment for Sheikh Hasina and her collaborators require, but the process must follow domestic and international legal procedures, TIB noted.
