The government is considering naming the new university for Dhaka-based seven government colleges as “July 36 University.”
On Thursday, a three-member committee, led by UGC Chairman Professor Dr SMA Faiz, floated the proposed name at a meeting with Education Adviser Dr Wahiduddin Ahmed.
However, the students of the colleges, until recently affiliated with Dhaka University, will take the final decision on the matter, Prof Dr SMA Faiz told reporters after the meeting with the adviser.
Among a few suggestions for naming the new university, “July 36 University” caught the attention of all the three committee members. Education adviser has also praised the name, Prof Dr SMA Faiz said.
The seven colleges are: Dhaka College, Titumir College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, Kabi Nazrul Government College and Mirpur Government Bangla College.
In 2017, the then Awami League (AL) government, replaced Dhaka University with National University as the sole administrator of the seven colleges to ease educational disruptions. However, the allegedly haphazard move rather worsened the sufferings for the college students, prompting them to take to streets demanding a separate university following the fall of AL government.
