Fences on border outcome of mutual understanding with Bangladesh: Jaiswal

Staff Reporter:

The installation of barbed wire fences in bordering areas is an outcome of the mutual understanding with neighbouring Bangladesh, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday.

“The ongoing installation of barbed wire fences is being carried out based on the agreement between the two countries. A joint effort from both nations is essential in this regard. The primary goal is to implement the agreements reached so far,” he said.

While addressing a regular weekly press briefing in New Delhi, Randhir Jaiswal said that both nations have reached a positive agreement in this connection to combat crimes along the Bangladesh-India border.

“Border fencing is a crucial measure in curbing crime. It is essential for preventing human trafficking, cattle smuggling, and various other offences. We hope the Bangladesh government will take a proactive role to ensure a crime-free border,” he said.

Responding to a query, he said that the activities of neighbouring countries, particularly those related to India’s security, are being closely monitored by his government.

Regarding the possible meeting between the BGB and BSF over recent unrest along the border, he stated that discussions are ongoing and that he will provide details once the meeting schedule is finalised.

“We always try to strengthen our friendly and good relationship with Bangladesh as it is important for us because of the mutual benefits of both countries,” said the ministry official.
