ACC sues Ziaul, wife for amassing illegal wealth of Tk41cr

Staff Reporter:

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday filed two separate cases against sacked Major General Ziaul Ahsan and his wife, Nusrat Jahan, on charges of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk41 crore.

The anti-graft body also traced suspicious transactions totalling Tk340 crore across 12 bank accounts belonging to the couple.

ACC Director General (Prevention) and spokesperson Md Akhtar Hossain revealed this information in a media briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Segunbagicha, Dhaka, on Thursday.

According to the case statement, Ziaul Ahsan, who was also the Director General of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC), acquired Tk22,27,78,142 beyond known sources of income. He also held a deposit of $55,000, in violation of the Guidelines of Foreign Exchange Transaction-2018 and FEPD Circular-6.

The commission also stated that the former army heavyweight transferred, handed over, and converted substantial wealth in the names of various persons and institutions with the help and connivance of his wife, Nusrat Jahan, through several bank accounts.

He has a transaction record of Tk120 crore across eight bank accounts in his name.

Meanwhile, Ziaul’s wife, Nusrat, amassed Tk18,59,31,358 beyond known sources of income and transacted Tk222.50 crore through four bank accounts in her name, according to the ACC.

A notorious commander of the paramilitary force RAB, Ziaul Ahsan was also accused in a number of murder cases. He is believed to be behind the forced disappearances of political opponents and their family members, and for keeping them in confined cells during the Awami League regime.
