BNP wants nat’l election after minimum reforms

Staff Reporter:
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday called for taking measures for hold-ing the national election after completing minimum reforms.
“We are not saying that we want elections just now. If the election is held following the minimum reforms, most of the existing problems will be solved,” he said.
Mirza Fakhrul was addressing a discussion organized by the Zia Memorial Library on the occasion of the 89th birth anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and the 12th founding anniver-sary of the Zia Memorial Library at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club here.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “I believe that our chief adviser will call us on these issues very soon and come to a solution. We will reach a consensus through discussion.”
About the medical admission results, Mirza Fakhrul said, ”The results of the admission tests for medical colleges have been released. So many boys and girls have taken the tests, but out of them, probably 5,500 have got chance for admission in various medical colleges in the country. What will the rest do?”
“A sort of frenzy is going on in the field of education. No one is paying attention to it, nor is talk-ing about it. Virtually no effort is being made to provide quality education,” he added.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “We have many problems in Bangladesh. However, education system has been completely ruined. I don’t think there is anything left of it. You start from primary school and go all the way to university, and you will see that the quality has gone so low.”
He said that the education system needs to be reformed.
Chaired by Zia Memorial Library President Abdus Salam and moderated by former student leader Abdus Sattar Patwari, the discussion was attended by educationist Professor Mahbub Ullah, policy researcher Mahadi Amin, Open University Vice Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam, educa-tionist Afroza Khanam Rita, journalist Amirul Islam Kagoji, teachers’ leader Zakir Hossain, social activist Sayyid Abdullah, Zia Memorial Library’s Zahir Dipti, Manjur Elahi, Kazi Zahirul Islam Bulbul and Hasan Al Arif, among others.
