Legal action against illegal foreigners after January

Home Adviser Lt. Gen. (retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury yesterday said the government will take legal action against the foreigners who are staying and working illegally in Bangladesh after January 31 next.
“After January 31, we will take legal action against the foreigners who are staying and working illegally in Bangladesh (if they fail to obtain legal documents). We will also take action against those who are employing them,” he said.
As per the law, he said that a work permit is required to give appointment to any foreigner.
Jahangir was talking to journalists after coming out of the meeting on law and order at the Secre-tariat here.
Replying to a question, as per the officials statistics there were 49,226 foreigners living illegally in Bangladesh and the number has reduced to 33,648 (as many of the illegal foreigners have already obtained legal documents)
“We have already collected Tk 10.53 crore as revenue from them,” he said.
About implementation of the recommendation of the Police Reform Commission, the home advis-er said the commission has given some good suggestions.
“But, it will take time to implement those. We are always talking about to build pro-people police. But, we have to change their mindset. We have to change the pattern of the police training to make them humane,” he said.
