Fakhrul calls for unity in sports arena

Staff Reporter:

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has underscored the need to build nonpolitical unity in the country’s sports arena to bring out talented and potential sportsmen.

He made the call after inaugurating the Shaheed Zia inter-thana football tournament 2025 organised by BNP at Pallabi City Club ground in Mirpur area of Dhaka on Friday.

The fascist Awami League government destroyed the country’s everything in the last 15 years and the sports arena is one of the biggest examples, he said.

The country’s sports arena was never politicised in the past but they (Awami League) did it deliberately during their rule, alleged the BNP leader.

“We came to know through newspapers, talented and potential sportsmen are denied scope in Bangladesh due to nepotism and political biasness. We began a new journey and thus we need unity in all sectors including the sports arena. A nonpolitical unity is imperative in the sector so that the potential sportsmen can contribute to rebuilding the nation,” he said.

Claiming that the sportsmen are mentally generous, Fakhrul said they can play a pivotal role in eradicating drug use in society. BNP Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman wants the youth community to focus on sports, sunning the path of drugs, Fakhrul said.

Citing achievements in the sports arena, he said late Arafat Rahman, younger son of Khaleda Zia, played an important role in ensuring the development of cricket in Bangladesh.
