An activist of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) was shot dead during a gunfight with an army-led joint drive at Naniarchar upazila of Rangmati on Thursday.
A press release of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said it this evening.
Based on secret information, a team of the Bangladesh Army carried out a special drive in Perachhara area of the upazila around 5:30 am and unearthed the main hideout of the UPDF, a regional political party based in the Chittagong Hill Tracts area.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the terrorists started open firing at them, compelling the law enforcers to retaliate, which triggered a gunfight.
Subsequently, one of the UPDF members was found dead on the spot while his accomplices managed to flee the scene with injuries.
During the operation, an assault rifle (M-16), two rounds of MG/Sniper ammunition, 90 rounds of rifle ammunition, a walkie-talkie set and 12 mobile phone sets were recovered from the spot.
Army operations were continuing to trace the terrorists who fled the spot, ISPR added.
