Badiul Alam asked to withdraw his statement on AL’s participation in polls

Staff Reporter:

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has outright rejected Badiul Alam’s remarks that there is no bar on Awami League to join the election and asked him to withdraw his remark immediately.

Umama Fatema, spokesperson for the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, issued a statement to the media on Thursday evening, holding Awami League accountable for several mass killings in the country.

Earlier in the day while talking to reporters in Rangpur, Badiul Alam Majumdar, chief of the Electoral System Reform Commission, said that there is no bar on any political party, including Awami League, in taking part in the next general elections.

He made the remarks after holding a views exchange meeting with local administrative officials, politicians and civil society members at Rangpur District Administration office.

Awami League has been indulged in committing abduction, enforced disappearance, extrajudicial killing and human rights violations for the last 16 years. At last, the party took the lives of around 2,000 people and injured over 30,000 during the July-August movement, she said in the statement.

Furthermore, the party has stigmatised the country’s electoral process by holding the last three national elections through illegal means, she said.

“In this context, the Awami League’s participation in the upcoming general election would contradict the aspirations embodied in the spirit of the July-August mass uprising. The blood of the July-August martyrs will be devalued if Awami League is allowed to participate in any political activities, including elections,” she said.

The spokesperson also urged Badiul Alam to immediately withdraw his statement and initiate appropriate measures so that Awami League cannot take part in any political activities or elections.
