India’s BSF has returned the body of Anwar Hossain, 40, to the Bangladeshi side after the Indian border security personnel gunned him down for allegedly trying to attack them during a daring smuggling scheme.
The body was returned as a result of a flag meeting between BGB and BSF in Panchagarh on Friday afternoon. Later, BGB handed over the body to Panchagarh Sadar Police Station for autopsy.
According to BGB’s 56 battalion in Nilphamari, Anwar crossed into India with some others illegally on Thursday night. On Friday dawn, the BSF intercepted them when they were trying to return to Bangladesh with some cows.
BSF also fired on the cow smugglers.
The BSF alleged the Bangladesh smugglers tried to retaliate with bamboo sticks and machetes, prompting them to fire in self-defence and leading to the instant death of Anwar.
BGB’s Ghagra camp also fired blank shots upon hearing gunfire nearby, BGB personnel said.
