Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed satis-faction over the High Court verdict that acquitted party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and all oth-ers convicted by the lower court in two cases over August 21 grenade attack.
“I express gratitude to the Almighty Allah for the acquittal of Tarique Rahman and all accused in the August 21 cases,” Fakhrul said in a statement from London.
Mirza Fakhrul is now in London on a 10-day visit along with his spouse.
The High Court (HC) yesterday acquitted all persons who were convicted by the lower court in two cas-es- one on murder and other on explosives substances- filed over the grenade attack on an Awami League rally in the capital’s Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21, 2004.
A High Court division bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain gave the verdict, scrapping the lower court judgment in the two cases.
In the statement, Mirza Fakhrul said the HC verdict proved that the fascist Awami League regime had implicated Tarique Rahman in these cases with ulterior political motive.
He said Tarique Rahman wanted to be acquitted from the charge in legal way. So he faced everything in the court and finally HC acquitted him.
Terming the verdict as a ‘historic’ one, he said this verdict once again proved that all the cases brought against Tarique Rahman were part of political conspiracy.
Upon learning about the verdict, Mirza Fakhrul himself thanked Allah and urged all party men across the country to thank God.
