icddr,b celebrates 64 years of pioneering global health research

Staff Reporter:

icddr,b, a global leader in health research and innovation, marked its 64th anniversary with a vibrant celebration at its Mohakhali campus in Dhaka on Thursday.

The event brought together staff, donors, media representatives, and well-wishers to honour icddr,b’s legacy and achievements while embracing a festive and joyous atmosphere, read a press release.

In his welcome remarks, icddr,b Executive Director Dr Tahmeed Ahmed highlighted the organisation’s transformative contributions to global health.

He particularly emphasised icddr,b’s role in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) approval of Cecolin, the fourth HPV vaccine for single-dose public use.

Dr Tahmeed described this milestone as a significant step forward in the fight against cervical cancer, a disease that claims a woman’s life every two minutes, with 90% of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries.

He also expressed deep appreciation for icddr,b’s scientists, researchers, and staff, who have built the institution into a globally recognised centre of excellence.

Dr Kazi Khaleed Ashraf, director-general of the Bengal Institute for Architecture, Landscapes, and Settlements, delivered the keynote address, titled “Architecture is Bigger than Architecture: The Making of Healthy Cities.”

Congratulating icddr,b on its remarkable journey, Dr Ashraf remarked that it is a globally respected institution and praised its decades-long contributions to health and innovation.

In his presentation, he explored the historic relationship between architecture and public health, noting that cities – as expanded works of architecture – lie at the heart of public health challenges and solutions.

He presented a thoughtful critique of urbanism in Dhaka and proposed 11 actionable ideas to shape a healthier, more liveable city, including regional planning, preserving riverbanks, framing floodplains, and fostering collaborative city-making.

Edwards Cabrera, first secretary (development-health) of Global Affairs Canada, also spoke on the occasion.

He commended icddr,b’s outstanding contributions to global health and noted that visitors from Canada have always been deeply impressed by the institution’s exceptional work.

The anniversary celebrations were enriched with a vibrant Fun Fair Marketplace, where icddr,b staff set up stalls featuring a variety of items for sale, read the release.

Visitors and staff enjoyed mingling, shopping, and sampling an array of food and beverages, creating a lively and cheerful atmosphere. The marketplace became a hub of joy and togetherness, reflecting the organisation’s sense of community.

The festivities continued with a lively cultural programme at the Sasakawa Auditorium, where icddr,b staff displayed their diverse talents.

The performances ranged from thought-provoking dramas and mesmerising magic shows to humorous renditions of popular English songs and energetic musical numbers. The event was filled with laughter and applause, showcasing the creativity and spirit of icddr,b’s team.

As icddr,b celebrates its 64th year, it continues to uphold its commitment to address critical health challenges with innovation and excellence. The day’s events highlighted not only its academic and scientific achievements but also the vibrant and dynamic community spirit that defines icddr,b.
