The capital’s rail communication with other parts of the country resumed on Thursday at 4.15pm as law enforcers managed to drive away agitating batter-run rickshaw drivers from the Mohakhali level crossing and nearby roads after nearly six hours.
Kamalapur Railway Station Master Mohammad Anwar Hossain confirmed the development.
For hours since Thursday morning, the rickshaw drivers also demonstrated at Dhanmondi 32 intersection, Agargaon road, Bosila road, Gabtoli, Mirpur-1 and Mirpur-10 areas to protest against a High Court ban on the accident-prone electric vehicles plying through Dhaka city.
At Mohakhali, they also clashed with army and police by hurling brick chips. Vehicles of law enforcers and nearby civilian establishments were vandalised in the attacks by rickshaw drivers.
Some sources claim police and army persuaded them to end demonstrations at Mohakhali, others claim the agitators were forced to leave as law enforcers stood their ground.
Police’s Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ruhul Kabir Khan said law enforcers persuaded the demonstrators to leave the spot.
