List of Jul-Aug uprising victims to be published by 31 Dec: Sarji

Staff Reporter:

Sarjis Alam, general secretary of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation, on Thursday said that the process of compiling the list of martyrs and the injured of the July-August uprising is being expedited and will be published by year-end.

He stressed that the list would be thoroughly verified to ensure its accuracy. “We want this list to be beyond question—not just today, but even 20 years from now.”

Sarjis was speaking at a press briefing in front of the office of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation. The briefing focused on the government’s plan for the treatment, rehabilitation and employment of those injured in the July-August uprising.

He added that they are working closely with various stakeholders to verify all details, and plan to complete the verification of martyrs’ families by November.

Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho, CEO of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation, shared that the Foundation has increased its financial assistance for the injured from Taka 1 lakh to Tk3 lakh, depending on the classification of injuries.

He also highlighted that many individuals have already spent significantly for their medical treatment, and the Foundation has initiated a reimbursement process. “This refund is separate from the Tk3 lakh assistance,” Snigdho clarified, urging those who have spent money on their own treatment to submit relevant receipts and documents for proper verification and reimbursement.

Khandaker Zahirul Islam, additional secretary and team leader of the Special Cell on Mass Uprising, revealed that the government is preparing specific policies to support the rehabilitation of the injured.

“Many of those hurt in the July movement face physical challenges that may impact their ability to return to work. To address this, the government is planning to create economic and social institutions to facilitate employment opportunities for the injured, as well as for the families of martyrs and those who have lost their ability to work due to their injuries,” Khandaker Zahirul added.
