Over a hundred villages flooded in Sherpur

Staff Reporter:

Two days of consistent rainfall and onrush of waters from Indian hills have flooded low-lying areas of over a hundred villages in Sherpur district and created multiple cracks on river protection dams.

At least 1,500 people have been left marooned due to the floods.

On Friday, river water was flowing at least 100 centimetres above danger level a three points of Bhogai river in Nalitabari upazila and another river was also flowing markedly above tolerable height in Jhinaigati upazila.

In the 24 hours till Friday morning, 225-milimetre rainfall was recorded in the district, according to an official of the local Water Development Board unit.

Cracks have also erupted in parts of a river protection dam due to the rains, the official told reporters.
