Killing at DU hall
8 students suspended, provost replaced

The Dhaka University (DU) administration yesterday temporarily suspended eight students for their al-leged involvement in the killing of Tofazzal Hossain (35), who was brutally beaten to death at a dormi-tory of the university on Wednesday last.
However, the DU administration has cancelled the residential accommodations of the eight students in their dormitory, according to a press release issued by DU yesterday.
Sources said miscreants held Tofazzal captive at the Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall of DU for several hours on Wednesday and beat him up mercilessly leading to his death.
The university authorities also removed the provost of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall and appointed a new provost.
“The provost of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall Shah Md Masum, has been replaced with Md Elias Al-Mamun, professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, being appointed as the new prov-ost”, the press release read.
Among the expelled students, three are former leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of Bangladesh Awami League.
They are- Jalal Ahmed, a former Deputy Secretary of Science and Technology Affairs of the organisa-tion, Ahsan Ullah, former Secretary of Mass Communication and Development Affairs and BCL Office Secretary Al Hossain Sajjad, a student of Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
The other expelled students are- Mohammad Sumon of the Department of Soil, Water, and Environment Sciences, Muttakin Sakin of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Md Firoz Kabir of the Depart-ment of Botany and two physics department students- Md Abdus Samad and Wazibul Alam.
Besides, the university authorities has taken steps to form another probe body from the university’s cen-tral administration to investigate the incident further and determine if any other students are involved in the incident.
Six of the eight accused— Jalal Mia, Mohammad Suman, Ahsan Ullah, Muttakin Sakin, Al Hossain Saj-jad, and Wazibul Alam — have already been arrested. All of them have already given confessional statements with the court to this end, sources added.
