Case filed against Asaduzzaman Noor 11 yrs after BNP leader’s murder

Staff Reporter:

A case has been filed against former culture minister Asaduzzaman Noor and 41 other Awami League members nearly 11 years after the alleged murder of Golam Rabbani, organising secretary of BNP’s unit in Nilphamari’s Lakshmichap Union.

Shahinaz Begum, the wife of the victim, filed the case with Nilphamari’s Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on Sunday.

According to the case statement, a group of Awami League men attacked Rabbani’s residence to take revenge for an alleged attack by BNP activists on Noor’s motorcade on 13 December 2013. Unable to find Rabbani, the Awami League members assaulted his family and set fire to his home.

Rabbani was later abducted from his house by plainclothes individuals claiming to be Detective Branch personnel on 15 January 2014. His body was found three days later near Arazi Itakhola in Nilphamari.

On Sunday, the court accepted the plaintiff’s statement and directed Nilphamari Sadar Police to file an FIR.

Local Awami League figures including district Awami League President Dewan Kamal Ahmed and General Secretary Momtazul Haque have also been sued in the case among others.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court on Monday sent to jail former culture minister Asaduzzaman Noor and ex-state minister for civil aviation Mahbub Ali to keep them in check until a murder investigation is completed.

The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested the two senior Awami League leaders in the capital on Sunday in a case filed over the killing of Siam Sardar, 17, allegedly by Awami League government-backed forces during the anti-discrimination student movement in July.
