The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained four individuals and seized a total of 32 gold bars in two separate operations in Kushtia.
This was confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel Md Mahbub Murshed Rahman, PSC, commander of the 47 BGB Kushtia Battalion, on Thursday night.
In the first operation, BGB members arrested two individuals with 1,373 grams of gold near the Kushtia border.
The detained were identified as Md Nazrul Islam, 20, and Md Selim Reza, 22.
Earlier that same day, another BGB team, during a search of a passenger bus, arrested two more individuals with 2,618.68 grams of gold, Tk5,804 in cash, and two smartphones.
The suspects were apprehended during an anti-smuggling operation on a JR Paribahan bus en route from Dhaka to Meherpur.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Mahbub Murshed Rahman said that the afternoon operation, led by Naib Subedar Md Shawkat Ali, took place near Sukarghat, approximately 3 km inside Bangladesh from border pillar 157/2-1-S.
The team seized 1,373 grams of gold, two Hero Honda motorcycles, two smartphones (with SIM cards), and Tk1,220 in cash. The total estimated value of the seizure was Tk14,219,527.
He added that a case has been filed with Daulatpur police station, and the gold is in the process of being deposited with the Kushtia District Treasury, in accordance with the rules.
The early morning raid, conducted by Assistant Director Md Jakirul Islam, targeted a JR Paribahan bus on the Amjhupi main road in Meherpur.
Two suspects, Alal Hossain and Rajib Hossain, were detained with 2,618.68 grams of gold (25 cut gold bars), Tk5,804, and two smartphones. The estimated value of the seizure in this operation was Tk26,025,804.
